Istanbul From The Eyes of Juergen Frank

Juergen Frank'in Gözlerinden İstanbul

My dear dear readers, I have neglected my blog terribly for the past week or so, but that is only because I'm buried up to my throat with projects that have very close deadlines: A school project, and also some other work for a design competition. I will definitely post my competition entry if my partner is OK with it. Anyways, my heart is still here at my blog, and I'm very happy that I came by a great photographer whose work I think might be interesting for my readers outside of Turkey. You know I live in Istanbul, and like any metropol this city is a combination of beautiful and ugly. Juergen Frank is a great photographer who managed to capture the beautiful, historical side of this city. Most of these picture here were taken for Cornucopia, an international magazine on Turkey and Turkish culture. Do take a look at their site, because there are more beautiful pictures where these came from.

Sanırım bu resim iç mimar Aslı Tunca'nın showroom'unda çekilmiş.

I'm not sure where this is, Juergen Frank's site only says "Aslı Tunca, Istanbul". Aslı Tunca is a tasteful Turkish interior designer, so I'm guessing this photo must be taken at her showroom.

The grand bazaar. I really didn't know it was this big. It is a shame to admit that I haven't been to the grand bazaar many times, and those times I went there I felt like I was in a foreign country. It is amazing, crazy, scary, majestic, magnificent... The mosque you can see in the distance is the Blue Mosque.

Tünel'den bir görünüş.

This is the "Tunnel Square" at Beyoglu. This paragraph from Cornucopia explains very well what Beyoglu is about, so I will just quote it without touching it:

"Beyoglu is Istanbul’s Latin Quarter. Built by European bankers, diplomats and merchants in the nineteenth century, it has now been recolonised by a new tribe dedicated to urban pleasures. Its imposing embassies and crumbling palazzos make it the ideal setting for the arts, and for a club-and-café scene that never sleeps. Beyoglu’s labyrinthine streets spill down the hill to Cukurcuma, where bargain hunters stalk antiques. At one end of Beyoglu is the medieval Galata Tower; at the other is Taksim Square and the monument to the new Republic which marks the start of modern Istanbul. Beyond is Nisantasi, the super-smart district for fashion, design and expense-account lunches."

Tagged!

Artwork By Jeremiah Ketner

bosluk
I've been tagged by All Things Bright and Beautiful! Making lists and talking about myself; what more can a girl want :)
bosluk
1- I'm a classic case of ADD, the most annoying symptom being the extremely short attention span.
bosluk
2- I'm a movie freak, I have a movie projector in my living room and watch a movie every night. I always have a long list of movies to get and watch.
bosluk
3- I'm also an animal freak, and had a very wide selection of pets to this day(rabbits, turtles, different kinds of birds, fish etc.) including many chicks that were taken care of so well that they all turned into very loyal roosters that would follow me everywhere (I even got one to sign my diary). Now I finally have a dog, which is the ultimate pet, really. I also have no problem petting snakes or mice.
bosluk
4- I loovvveee fantasy literature and can read a series in a heartbeat. When I'm done reading a 5 book series I feel sad that it is over. I also love fairy tales, elves, gnomes, witches, princesses, dragons - anything that is from a magical realm.
bosluk
5- My boyfriend can perform therapy with bioenergy. Which is actually about him, but him being cool makes me cool too!
bosluk
6- I think I'm very indecisive (but my mom suggests that's only because I'm very clear in my head about what I want). Well, it takes time to pick between two exact same pairs of earrings that both have small flaws (I have to decide which one is less flawed), perfectionist or just indecisive, it really annoys the person I'm shopping with.
bosluk
7- There's no way you can tell by the way I look but I was such a nerd in college! Sitting always in the front row and taking notes like crazy. I used to distribute my notes to the whole class before the exams.
bosluk
As part of the game I'm tagging 3 bloggers (I know I'm supposed to tag more but everybody seem to be already tagged/ or I'm too shy to ask) :
bosluk
M.A. Belle - Beautiful beautiful blog I have recently discovered.
bosluk
That's Chic - One of my favorite fashion blogs ever, I check this one daily!
bosluk
Made by Girl - The gorgeous girl behind the witty, fabulous cards.

Karlı bir gün
bosluk
Bütün gece kar yağdı, her yer bembeyaz.

It's snowing here today. Although the view is spectacular, it is quite cold and a good reason to stay at home. It is so lovely to come across these lovely vivid colors and fairy illustrations. Thanks to Meltem Sozer for warming up our hearts with her bright and lively colors.

Vintage Postcards

Vintage Kartpostallar
b

There is a blog called Red.House, owned by a very tasteful Swedish designer who lives in the USA. I just loovvveee Swedish style, furniture, their sense of estethics, but I don't speak a word of their language so Red.House is a great blog to keep in touch with Swedish design-related things. Anyways, she had posted an adorable picture a while ago, and I checked out the source and found out that it was a vintage Swedish postcard, and there were many other cute cards where it came from! Here is a few:

Front: Design by Women

Front: Kadınlar Tarafından Tasarım
bosluk
Stockholm, İsveç merkezli, tamamen kadınlardan oluşan bir tasarım grubu Front. Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken, Anna Lindgren, Katja Sävström bir araya geldiklerinde içinde zekice düşünceler, yeni yaklaşımlar barındıran çok yaratıcı tasarımlar yapıyorlar, öyle ki onların tasarımlarını, bir sanat eserine hayran hayran bakarcasına inceliyor insan.
bosluk
Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Front is a design group completely consisting of 4 cool, smart, beautiful women. Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken, Anna Lindgren and Katja Sävström design very creative products that are innovative in many terms and that have a philosophy and interesting thoughts beneath them. I admire their designs as if admiring an art work; they have so much depth in them.

Gündelik sıradan objelerden esinlenerek tasarladıkları koleksiyondan "Bin" adlı çöp kutusu. İçindeki çöp miktarına göre şekil değiştiriyor.
bosluk
"Bin" trash bin is from a collection of theirs that was inspired by common everyday objects. It changes shape depending on how much trash is in it.
bosluk

bosluk

"Found (bulunmuş)" koleksiyonundan "Confetti(konfeti)" avize.
bosluk
"Confetti" chandelier from the "Found" collection. In this collection, they took already existing things, changed some details, and as they say it "le tthe small characteristics of one object become the essence of the new product". What I like about this is that you don't see a few disco balls but you see this huge glamorous complete object. And also the light confetti it creates is so pretty. It might even look good in a house, one with an entrance that connects two floors, with a very high ceiling.
bosluk

bosluk
Yine "Found" koleksiyonundan "Reflection(yansıma)" adlı büfe.
bosluk
"Reflection" cupboard from the "Found collection. The reflection on the cupboard is like it's from another time, as if the reflection is still lingering long after that moment has passed.
bosluk

bosluk

"Animals (hayvanlar)" koleksiyonundan "Fare Duvar Kağıdı". Bu koleksiyonda tasarım işini hayvanlara bırakmışlar. Minik farenin kağıt rulosunu kemirmesi ile ortaya çıkan desenler duvar kağıdında kullanılmış.
bosluk
"Rat Wallpaper" from the Animals collection. Design of this collection was in collaboration with animals; the holes that this little fella made by gnawing rolls of wallpaper created original patterns.
bosluk

bosluk
"Insect (böcek)" masa da Hayvanlar koleksiyonundan. Böceklerin ahşap üzerinde yarattıkları izlerden esinlenerek masanın dokusu üzerindeki desenleri oluşturmuşlar.
bosluk
"Insect" table from the same collection. The pattern is formed by the paths that insects make on a piece of wood.
bosluk

bosluk
Sineklerin sersem ersem uçtuğu burdan belli oluyor.
bosluk
"Fly" lamp was made by recording and materializing the movements of a fly around a light bulb by using motion capture technique. I guess that was one woozy fly they recorded.
bosluk

bosluk
Üzerine oturan kişinin izinin çıktığı ahşap bank.
bosluk
Wooden bench that leaves an imprint of your tush.

bosluk
"Design by (tarafından tasarım)" koleksiyonundan "Design by Gravity (yerçekimi tarafından tasarım)" lamba.
bosluk
"Design by Gravity" lamp from the "Design by" collection. It wakes and lights up when you enter the room, and faints when you leave. You could have this lamp as a pet!
bosluk

"Design by Motion (hareket tarafında tasarım)" vazo.

"Design by Motion" vase. They thought that falling and breaking is a vase's destiny, and function. So they built in the "fall" to the vase. This one is my personal favorite among the rest of their designs.

They experimented with well-known technology objects in their "Technology" colelction. Apparently, the round speakers and glass create excellent sound quality when combined like this. Also thank God someone finally did some speakers other than the dust collecting ugly black ones or cute-but-too-hi-tech-for-my-decor ones. The hiding technological objects in cabinets thing did need to stop. I wonder if they have got anything in mind about television designs..?

Dream Kitchen for the Dream House

Me and my mom have been looking for kitchen ideas for the country house my parents are building. We came by really beautiful kitchens, and there's that one thing I like about each of them. But we found this kitchen in Country Living, it belongs to a cute farm house, and the kitchen has been re-made by designer David T. Smith. Now this is one kitchen that I like
everything about.

bosluk
They used 3 different colors of cupboards; cream, burgundy, wood. The wood cabinets are matching the countertops, and the cream and burgundy cabinets are 2 different colors of the same cabinet. So everything looks tied together. My mom had already decided on these cupboard doors in white, but now maybe we will throw in another color as well. We were going to have a rustic wood countertop, that hasn't changed. By the way we are definitely leaving some space for a huge wall clock with roman numerals.

bosluk
bosluk
This house makes me realize that I NEED shaker chairs. How the hell have I been living without them?? It's ironic how I'm lusting after a piece of furniture that was originally designed by people who lived their life by rejecting mundane desires.

The Story of Saarinen Table and Other Little Chairs

bosluk
At the end of my mix & match chairs post I said I was going to do a post on the famous "Tulip" table by Eero Saarinen. I'm keeping my promise. This time I tried to find chairs that would go well with this iconic table. Actually this table is so versatile that it looks good with almost anything. Still, I managed to come by some decors that make this table really shine. I hope you like them as much as I did.

bosluk
Ok so now we know this table looks awesome with bold walls and nice lighting. The use of the chunky brown stools are very refreshing, we are so used to seeing this table with sophisticated chairs. Did I mention I LOVE that gold wallpaper?

bosluk
With the Starck "Ghost" chairs and fresh flowers. I adore the chair cushions (note to self: gold, turquoise and pink go perfect together). Here we see the romantic side of the Saarinen table, which I like more than the edgy modern side of it. Didn't I tell you this table is the ultimate versatile piece of furniture?

bosluk
The dining corner from designer Liza Giles' home. This beautiful house was featured on Decor8, and looking at the house as a whole, I understand that Liza Giles has such a great eye, and that this table is just a perfect choice for her home. The lesson we need to learn from this is: if we want to use this table with it's matching "Tulip" set of chairs, we should accessorize it with feminine objects in order to avoid monotonousness. Just because a table is a major design object doesn't mean we shouldn't blend it in with the rest of our decor.

Geldik ikinci dersimize: Saarinen masa ahşap sandalyeler ile birleştiğinde yemek odasında öte birşey oluyor; ona bakmak, onu sevmek, o güzelim parlaklığına hayran olmak istiyoruz. Burada pahalı Cherner kollu sandalyeler ile birlikte görülüyor. Çiçekler, avize, duvarlar... "Beğeni"yi ifade eden yeni sözcükler lazım bana...
bosluk
Here is our second lesson: when the Saarinen table unites forces with wooden chairs, it kicks some major decor ass. It's beyond a dining area now, it's something to be loved, admired, be mesmerized by it's glossiness... Here we see it teamed with the very expensive Cherner armchairs. The flowers, chandelier, the walls...I need new adjectives to express my feelings of love..

Classical style furniture and a symmetrical decor. If it wasn't a Saarinen in this picture, this room could have been too typical. But now it's gorgeous.

Ahşap tablalı Saarinen beyaz bir ortamda. Sandalyeler nereden bilmiyorum ama çok güzeller. Aynı olmasa da benzer tarzda beyaz ahşap sandalyeler Mudo Concept'ten bulunabilir, veya eskicilerden alınıp beyaza boyanabilir, hatta boyanırken buradaki gibi ayakları ahşap rengi bırakılabilir.
bosluk
I don't know where these chairs are from but I found something similar at the Anthropologie website. Scroll down for info on that, because I found a huge selection of chairs and listed them. Anyways, you could also paint an existing bentwood chair like this.

bosluk
Aynı sandalyenin kolsuz versiyonu, detaylarda da kırmızı. Beyaz ortamlarda kırmızı detaylar her zaman sevimli bir etki yaratır.
bosluk
The same chair without arms, and red details. Red details in a white environment always look cute. There's the "Beautiful Mind" thing going on on the walls but I don't think we're supposed to get design ideas from that.
bosluk

bosluk
Provencal chairs, "Tulip" armchair and marble table. The gold hues in the marble is tying the table to the chairs. And there's the big chandelier again. This decor is a great example of mixing very different style/era furniture together. It looks much more sophisticated and unexpected than using the matching set.

Thonet'in No 9 sandalyeleri ile mutfakta.

In the kitchen with Thonet No 9 chairs. This table looks great with any Thonet, but if I were to buy one I'd pair it with No 14s. A few years ago I saw an apartment in a magazine, and that's how they had used the Tulip table. You can tell how beautiful it was by the fact that I'm still remembering it. I will post that house as soon as I get a scanner.

Up to this point we have seen it on bare floors but of course it looks equally great on a rug. The branch accessory also adds a great touch.

After seeing all these examples you probably have an idea what kind of style you want to use your Saarinen table in. 1800'lü yıllarda, buharda bükülen ahşapla yapılan ilk sandalyelerin ardındaki beyin Michael Thonet tarafından tasarlanmışlar.
They were designed in the 1800s by Michael Thonet, and they are pioneers in design because of the bentwood technique and their ability to be disassembled. I had the privilage of meeting Michael Thonet's heir, Peter Thonet (at Domus Academy in Milan).

Air Chair
Designed by Jasper Morrison, this chair is already an icon. That is because it was the first chair to be produced by "gas injection", which means there is air trapped inside the chair, making it unbelievably durable despite it's delicate figure. How do I know this? Stefano Giovannoni told me first hand :) In a lecture of course.

Cherner Side Chair
This elegant chair is designed in 1958 by Norman Cherner. Anyone who has an interest in design history know that these old chair designs have much more depth than being just beautiful objects, they represent a new production technique, a new philosophy, a longing for a new life style; that's why it's a privilage to own such items.
